You don't need to be a sports fan or even a football fan to appreciate the courage and sacrifices of David Kopay.
Kopay was an All-American running back in his senior year at the University of Washington. He played professional football from 1964 to 1972 with five different teams- the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions, the Washington redskins, the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers.
Three years after retiring from the sport, Kopay turned the sports world upside down by publicly coming out in a newspaper interview. Kopay was the first professional team sport athlete to come out. Since that time, very few others have followed in his footsteps.
He later tried to get into coaching, but the NFL and colleges expressed no interest after he came out.
