The U.S. Supreme Court announced that they will hear all four marriage equality cases in front of them on Tuesday, April 28, and that a ruling will most likely be announced in late June / early July of 2015. The decision in this case is likely to be the precedent for LGBT rights language legally used for many years to come; it is critically important that this decision go our way!
Like in 2013, a coalition of organizations and dedicated local organizers will be working together leading up to the oral arguments and Decision Day to make clear to the Supreme Court that the American public supports marriage equality, and that now is the time to rule once and for all that all couples -- gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and straight -- are entitled to the same rights and protections of marriage. If this language is clearly supportive of marriage, it will be used in all manner of cases affecting transgender, gender non-binary, and bisexual/pansexual rights as well. We all have a stake in this.
In Bakersfield, we will once again break out our pink GAY IS GOOD shirts, (or your favorite LGBT shirt and flag,) and meet OUTSIDE the Outback Steakhouse corner on Stockdale Hwy at 5pm on April 28. Come by after work on your way home; we'll be there till 7pm. There is plenty of parking nearby and you don't have to walk very far.
We are making signs on April 11 for Tax Day (April 15) already, so we can also make these signs, too; or you can just make your own if you prefer. We'll have signs and flags onsite if you need one.
The media will be invited.
This event is free of charge, and will be sponsored by Bakersfield LGBTQ and Marriage Equalityy USA.
